It's hard to know who to trust about sport utility vehicles. On one side, there are a bunch of tree huggers, some of whom throw around exaggerated facts and doomsday warnings. On the other side are the auto manufacturers -- and we know that they're just trying to get as many of these things off the lot as possible.

So, we did our best to try to find reliable sources for the information below. We've noted our sources, in each case, so you can always decide for yourself how much credibility to give the information.

Having studied the facts ourselves, we don't think SUVs are completely useless. They do meet the needs of some people. But we do think that there are serious downsides to them. And we think that many people who buy them, don't need them. See what you think.
