Puzzler Answer 2/7/97: Japanese Discovery

Ray: During World War II the Japanese discovered a secret weapon, which they had hoped to use to their military advantage. They didn't, it turns out.

Tom: They tried, though.

Ray: They tried, but it was not to their military advantage. They did use it. And this discovery is something that is used by virtually every country in the world today...daily!

Tom: It certainly is. Not to mention certain industries.

Ray: What was the discovery and how was paper involved? That's a little hint, or something to throw you off course.

Here's the answer: The Japanese discovered the jet stream.
